Overview
The Fence step sets the foundation for the template: which fence type it belongs to, what you call it, which heights and colors this template covers, and default post spacing.
Where in the app: Template wizard → Fence (step 1)
Open: Fence Builder
Fields on this step
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Fence type | Product line (Chain Link, Vinyl, etc.) — must exist with heights and colors configured |
| Template name | Clear label for your team (for example, 6 ft Chain Link – Residential) |
| Description | Customer-facing specifications for this fence style (see below) |
| Heights | Which sizes this template handles — select all that share the same formulas |
| Colors | Which finishes this template handles |
| Post spacing | Default distance between line posts (used in takeoff math) |
Description (strongly recommended)
Description is optional in the app, but strongly recommended. This is not internal notes — it is customer-facing copy that appears on estimates and in the Lead Generator when prospects browse fence styles.
Use it to spell out what this template represents so your team and customers know exactly what they are quoting. Include specifics such as:
- Post type and size (for example, 2-3/8" line posts, 4×4 wood posts)
- Rail, panel, or fabric details (gauge, mesh size, board type)
- Gate options included or typical for this style
- Notable install details (setback, footing, grade, wind load, warranty tier)
- Anything else that distinguishes this style from another template in the same fence type
Write for the customer reading a proposal or using your online configurator — clear, factual, and complete.
Step-by-step
- Start a New template from My Fences or Fence Builder.
- Select the fence type.
- Enter a template name.
- Add a description with customer-facing specifications (recommended).
- Check every height and color combination this template should cover.
- Enter post spacing (required).
- Click Save and continue to move to Images.
Tips
- Group heights in one template when they use the same number of rails, same post logic, and same component structure. Split into a second template only when formulas differ.
- Height and color options come from the fence type. If options are missing, add them on the fence type first — see Fence Types.
