Why I Built Dirt Face

I spent 15 years as a fence contractor. I dug tens of thousands of holes, set countless posts, stretched miles of chain link, and ran a bunch of crews. And the whole time, I was looking for software that actually understood how a fence contractor works.

It didn't exist.

So I started building it myself — nights and weekends, between jobs. But before I could finish, I sold the fence company. Life moved on. I became a general contractor, then founded a manufacturing business, which I sold in 2023.

But the idea never left me.

I kept thinking about all the fence contractors still running their businesses off spreadsheets and paper estimates. Still texting photos back and forth to figure out a job. Still losing quotes because they took too long to get back to a customer. I knew exactly how that felt because I'd lived it for 15 years.

So I went back and built the software I wished I'd had.

Dirt Face is everything I needed when I was running fence crews — fast estimates, material takeoffs that are actually right, shop drawings that don't require a drafting degree, scheduling that doesn't fall apart, and invoicing that doesn't live in a separate app. All in one place.

I built it for fence contractors. This industry is in my blood. I know what it's like to lose a job because your quote was a day late. I know what it is like to drive a hundred miles to add a missing post cap in order to finish a job and get paid. I know what "close enough" costs you at the end of the year.

Dirt Face exists so you don't have to figure this out the hard way like I did.

Why the name Dirt Face? My wife started calling me "Dirt Face" after I came home from a particularly brutal job — caked in mud from head to boots. It stuck. And honestly, there's no better name to describe a fence contractor. It's all about hard work and a lot of dirt.
